Helping Young Readers to Rise Above Physical Afflictions

Eleven-year-old Eddie Torrelli has no place of significance in his 5th grade world. His physical attributes are a source of shame for him and an excuse for teasing by classmates. When Eddie's dad abandons the family and his best friend moves away, his already shaky self-image plummets. Dubbed by classmate bullies, "Eduardo Magnifico" because of his special corrective lenses, compounds his misery. Eddie's life is impacted by three important characters, "Wink," his neighbor, Frosty, a dog that stumbles into his home during a snowstorm, and Jerrydon Howard, a new friend. These three help to transform Eddie into a confident and happy young man. Along the way, he learns some valuable lessons about honesty and forgiveness.

Guilty Until Proven Innocent - Going to Hollywood

This is the true story of a decorated NYC Police Lt. Detective and former World War II bomber pilot, Jack Jennings.

After Jennings retired from the police force, he started a successful armored car company. When it was robbed one night of $11.4 million dollars (the biggest such crime in American history), the politically ambitious DA waged a five-year-long persecution of Jennings, knowing he did not commit the crime.

This is the story of how Jennings, with the help of his nurse-turned-lawyer daughter, eventually proved his innocence.

I adapted the book into a screenplay, which is now being shopped to Hollywood.

Solving Crimes Under Water

Kathy Brandt had wanted to write for a long time. She is an avid mystery reader, a scuba diver and she loves sailing.

So it was only natural that she write mystery books about the water. Not the surface of the water, but below it. Her series of books feature Hannah Sampson, an underwater investigator and homicide detective based in Denver.

Although this may seem a counter-intuitive setting for underwater mysteries, it makes sense because so many such investigations take place in bodies of fresh water.

Brandt had to do a lot of research to make her books technically accurate, including doing underwater invesgiation herself. "Fresh water retrival of evidence is much more difficult than in salt water," Brandt said. "The water is murky, filled with sediment and often very cold."

A former writing teacher at the University of Colorado, her four (so far) Hannah Sampson books were published by NAL/Penguin. They are now available as ebooks.

Bestselling author Clive Cussler has high praise for Brandt:  "A terrific writer. The scene with the sharks inside the aircraft was enough to cause nightmares and using an underwater heroine is admirable."
